Rodent Cleanup & Sanitizing
When rodents get into an attic, a crawl space or a wall void, trapping them is only half the job. What they leave behind is the other half. Droppings, urine soaked insulation, nesting material and grease trails stay in the space long after the last mouse is gone, and the scent they leave is an open invitation to the next one.
Envirosafe handles the cleanup side of rodent and bat work across Belmont, Gastonia, Gaston County, York County SC and the Charlotte area. We take out the contaminated material, sanitize and deodorize the space, then seal the openings that let them in so you are not paying to do this twice.
What Rodent Cleanup Covers
- Removal of droppings, nesting material and urine soaked insulation
- HEPA vacuuming of accessible attic and crawl space surfaces, no dry sweeping
- An EPA registered sanitizer applied to the surfaces it is labeled for
- Odor and pheromone treatment, because the smell they leave is what calls in the next rodent
- Insulation replacement where coverage was lost, quoted separately
- Photos of the space before and after, so you can see exactly what was done
Do Not Sweep It Up Yourself
This is the part most homeowners get wrong, and it matters. Dry sweeping or running a shop vac over rodent droppings puts the dust into the air you are standing in. The CDC guidance on rodent cleanup exists for a reason.
Hantavirus is carried by rodents and spreads through their urine, droppings and nesting material once that material gets stirred up. Rodents are also tied to salmonellosis and leptospirosis. Histoplasmosis is a different problem and comes from a fungus that grows in accumulated bat and bird droppings, not from rodents. Different animal, different risk, different cleanup.
We wet the material down, bag it, and take it out rather than turning it into airborne dust. If you have already found droppings in your attic, leave them alone and call us at 704-860-2041.
Seal It Out, Then Clean It Up
Cleanup on its own is a temporary win. If the gap that let them in is still open, you are cleaning the same attic again next winter. That is why we bundle the two.
The package is straightforward. First we find and seal the entry points, which is our pest proofing work, sealing gaps at the roof line, soffit returns, foundation penetrations, crawl space vents and utility openings. Then we clean, sanitize and deodorize what was left behind. Doing it in that order means the space stays clean instead of getting re-colonized a month later.
If you are still dealing with active mice or rats, start with rodent control and we will roll the proofing and cleanup in behind it.
What a Cleanup Visit Looks Like
We start with an inspection of the affected space so we can tell you what we are actually dealing with, how far it spread and whether the insulation is salvageable. You get that assessment before any work starts, with a firm price.
On the work day the crew comes in with respirators, disposable suits and a HEPA vacuum. Contaminated insulation and nesting material get bagged and removed. Hard surfaces get vacuumed and treated. The space gets deodorized to break the scent trail. If insulation is being replaced, that goes in last so it is not laid over anything dirty.
Most single attic jobs finish in a day. A whole crawl space with heavy contamination can run two.
Attics, Crawl Spaces and Bat Guano
Attics are the common one. Insulation holds droppings and urine the way a sponge holds water, and the smell will find its way into the living space through can lights and attic hatches.
Crawl spaces bring a second problem. Rodent damage under a house usually shows up alongside a moisture problem that made the space attractive in the first place, so cleanup often pairs with crawl space and moisture control work. If there is fungal growth on the framing, that is a separate scope and our mold remediation side handles it.
Bat guano is its own job. It accumulates in one spot, it is heavier than rodent droppings, and it is the histoplasmosis risk. Bats are also protected during their maternity season in North Carolina, so timing and exclusion have to be handled correctly before any cleanup starts.
Rodent Cleanup FAQ
Do I really need cleanup, or is trapping enough?
Trapping ends the infestation. It does not remove the droppings, the urine soaked insulation or the scent trail, and that scent is what draws the next rodent to the same entry point. If the contamination is limited to a few droppings on a hard floor, that is a wipe down. If it is through the insulation, it needs to come out.
Can I just vacuum the droppings up myself?
We would not. A household or shop vacuum has no HEPA filtration, so it puts the dust straight back into the room. Dry sweeping does the same thing. The safe method is to wet the material, bag it and remove it, which is how we do it.
Is hantavirus really a risk in North Carolina?
Cases are rare here, but the exposure route is real and it comes from disturbing rodent droppings, urine and nests in an enclosed space like an attic or crawl space. The precaution costs you nothing. That is the whole reason we do not dry sweep.
Do you replace the insulation you take out?
We remove what is contaminated as part of the cleanup. Replacing it is quoted separately, because the amount and the R value depend on the space. We will tell you at the inspection whether yours needs replacing or just cleaning around.
Do you seal the house too, or just clean?
Both, and we recommend doing them together. Sealing the entry points is our pest proofing service. Cleanup without sealing means you are back in the same attic next season.
How much does rodent cleanup cost?
It depends on the size of the space and how far the contamination spread, so we price it after the inspection rather than guessing over the phone. Call 704-860-2041 and we will come look at it.
