The Ants We Deal With Around Gastonia

  • Odorous house ants. The tiny brown ants marching along the counter and the baseboard. Crush one and it smells like rotten coconut. They nest in wall voids, under slabs and in mulch, and they split into new colonies when you spray them, which is why store bought sprays make them worse.
  • Argentine ants. Massive interconnected colonies with many queens. Trails hundreds of feet long. Same problem with spraying: you scatter them.
  • Pavement ants. The ones pushing little soil piles up through driveway cracks, patios and slab expansion joints.
  • Fire ants. Red imported fire ants, mounds in open sun, aggressive and stinging in numbers. Heaviest in newer subdivisions built on old pasture and farmland.
  • Carpenter ants. Big black ants that hollow out damp wood. Different problem, different treatment, covered on our carpenter ant page.
  • Acrobat and crazy ants. Show up seasonally, often after heavy rain drives colonies out of saturated soil.

Why Store Bought Ant Spray Makes It Worse

A contact spray kills the ants you can see. The colony is not the ants you can see. With odorous house ants and Argentine ants, spraying the trail triggers budding: the colony splits and satellite groups move away from the pressure. You go from one trail in the kitchen to four trails in four rooms.

The colony is what has to die, which means the workers have to carry the material back to it. That is baiting, and it takes patience. Ants swarming a bait station a day after treatment is the treatment working, not failing.

How We Treat Ants

Identify the species first. Odorous house ants, pavement ants and carpenter ants get three different treatments. The wrong ID means the wrong product and no result.

Find the trail and the entry. Ants follow chemical trails along structural lines: the sill plate, plumbing lines, wire runs, the edge of the slab. We follow them back rather than treating where you saw them.

Bait the colony. Non repellent material and bait placed on the trail so it moves through the colony to the queens.

Treat the exterior. A perimeter band and treatment of the mulch, landscape timbers, slab joints and foundation gaps where colonies stage before coming in.

Fire ant mounds get treated directly and the turf gets a broadcast where pressure justifies it. Kicking or flooding a mound just relocates it.

Remove what draws them. Standing water, pet food, a leaking hose bib, mulch piled against siding, tree limbs touching the roof.

Fire Ants and Safety

Fire ants sting rather than bite, they do it in groups, and they do it on command when the mound is disturbed. For a child, a pet or anyone with a sting allergy that is a real risk in their own yard. Mounds can also appear overnight after rain, so a yard that was clear last week is not clear now.

If fire ants are the main problem and the yard is what you care about, our Ultra Yard Plan handles it on a schedule instead of one mound at a time.

Ant Control FAQ

Why do I still see ants after treatment?

With baiting, seeing ants for several days is expected and is how the colony gets dosed. What matters is whether trails are gone in one to two weeks.

Should I clean up the trail before you come?

Wipe up food and spills, but do not spray the trail with a store product. That scatters the colony and makes our job harder.

Why do they come back every spring?

Colonies outside the structure survive the winter and go looking for food and water when it warms. Ongoing exterior service is what keeps them from getting back to the same entry point.

Do you treat fire ant mounds in the whole yard?

Yes, mound by mound and broadcast where the pressure calls for it. Coverage runs to a full acre on the standard plan.

Are ants in the bathroom a plumbing problem?

Often. Ants follow moisture. A recurring trail in a bathroom or under a sink is worth checking for a slow leak.
