Fleas have mouthparts adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood and will feed on the blood of any warm-blooded body, thus posing serious potential health risks to the well-being of your family and pets. Fleas may also cause an allergic reaction in humans and transmit tapeworms and other diseases to your pets. Thanks to our mild Carolina winters, there is not enough cold weather to reduce the populations of fleas and ticks.
Fleas will typically attach to the fur of your pets and can quickly infest your home. Fleas can also enter homes through other pests such as rodents, or by clinging to the clothing or shoes of a person after he or she has been outside. Even homes without pets often become infested with fleas and about 50% of our treatments are performed on homes and yards that have no pets.

Why Fleas Are Hard to Kill
The fleas you see are a small fraction of what is in the house. A flea population is roughly half eggs, a third larvae, a tenth pupae, and only a small remainder adults. Everything except the adults is down in the carpet fibers, in the cracks between floorboards, under furniture, in pet bedding and in the crawl space.
The pupal stage is the reason a single treatment can look like a failure. A flea inside its cocoon is protected from almost anything applied to the surface, and it can sit there dormant for weeks waiting for a signal that a host is nearby: vibration, warmth, carbon dioxide. That signal is you walking across the floor. So fleas emerging a week after treatment is normal and expected. They emerge into treated surfaces and die, which is exactly how it is supposed to work.
Three Things Have to Happen Together
The pet gets treated. By your veterinarian, with a product that fits the animal. We do not treat animals and you should not use a yard or premise product on a pet. If the pet is untreated, the house gets reinfested no matter what we do.
The premises get treated. Carpet, rugs, along baseboards, under and behind furniture, pet resting areas, and any crawl space or under-porch space the animals use.
You vacuum, thoroughly and repeatedly. Vacuuming pulls eggs and larvae out of carpet fibers and, importantly, the vibration triggers pupae to hatch early so they emerge into the treatment instead of three weeks later. Vacuum daily for two weeks and empty the canister or bag outside each time.
Skip any one of those three and the problem comes back. That is the whole reason flea jobs get a reputation for taking multiple visits.
Before We Arrive
- Vacuum every carpeted room, rugs, and upholstered furniture, then empty it outside
- Wash all pet bedding in hot water, and human bedding if pets sleep on it
- Pick up toys, clothes and clutter off the floors so surfaces can be reached
- Have the pet treated by the vet, ideally the same day
- Plan to be out of treated rooms until surfaces are dry
- Tell us about crawl spaces, sheds or porches the pets get under
Do Not Forget Outside
Fleas outdoors live in shaded, humid, protected spots, not in open sunny lawn. The places that matter are under the deck and porch, along the foundation in the shade, under shrubs, in the crawl space, and wherever the dog lies down. Wildlife matters too. Opossums, feral cats, raccoons and stray dogs cross the property and drop eggs, which is how a house with an indoor-only cat still ends up with fleas.

Flea Control FAQ
I still see fleas after treatment. Did it fail?
Almost certainly not. That is the pupal stage hatching into treated surfaces, and it can go on for one to two weeks. Keep vacuuming. Call us if activity is still climbing after three weeks.
How long until they are gone?
Most homes are clear within two to three weeks when the pet, the house and the vacuuming are all handled together.
Can fleas live in a house with no pets?
For a while, yes. They will feed on people, and a house left vacant after a pet moved out can hold dormant pupae for weeks and then hatch all at once when someone walks in.
Are those bites on my ankles fleas or something else?
Ankle level bites in clusters point to fleas. Bites in lines on the arms and torso overnight point somewhere else. If you are not sure, see our bed bug page and call us before treating for the wrong thing.
Do I need to leave the house?
Out of the treated rooms until the surfaces dry. Pets too, and let us know about birds or fish tanks so they can be covered.
