Spiders You Actually See in Gaston County

  • Black widow. Glossy black, red hourglass on the underside of the abdomen. Lives low and dark: crawl spaces, woodpiles, meter boxes, under deck steps, in garages and unused pots. The one on this list with a bite that needs a doctor.
  • Brown recluse. Uncommon in this part of North Carolina and misidentified constantly. Most “recluse” bites people bring us turn out to be something else entirely. We will tell you honestly if what you have is one.
  • Carolina wolf spider. Large, fast, hairy, hunts on the ground instead of building a web. Alarming to find, not dangerous. Usually a sign of an insect population it is feeding on.
  • Common house spider. The tangled cobwebs in ceiling corners, basements and garages.
  • Orb weavers. The big round webs across the porch every fall. Beneficial outside, just not across your front door.
  • Cellar spiders. Long thin legs, hanging upside down in crawl spaces and basement corners.

Why the Webs Keep Coming Back

Spiders are predators. They set up where the food is. If webs keep reappearing in the same corner of the porch, that corner has an insect supply, usually because a light above it pulls in flying insects all night, or because there is a moisture source nearby feeding gnats, midges and mosquitoes.

That is why spraying spiders alone rarely holds. Knock down the prey population and the spiders leave on their own or never move in. Our perimeter service works both sides of it at once.

How We Treat for Spiders

Web and egg sac removal. Physical removal from eaves, corners, railings, light fixtures and door frames. An egg sac left in place is a few hundred spiders in a couple of weeks.

Perimeter and harborage treatment. Material where spiders travel and hide: the foundation band, under decks and steps, around window and door frames, in the garage, in the crawl space.

Prey reduction. Treating for the insects spiders eat is half the job.

Exclusion. Door sweeps, torn screens, gaps at the sill and utility penetrations. Sealing them keeps spiders out permanently rather than quarterly. See our pest proofing service.

Moisture. Damp crawl spaces support the whole food chain. If yours is wet, that is where the problem starts. Our crawl space and moisture control work addresses it.

Black Widows and Safety

If you have small children, or you reach into a crawl space, woodpile, shed or meter box on your property, black widows are worth taking seriously. They are not aggressive and they bite when trapped against skin, which is why gloves matter. If someone is bitten and develops severe abdominal or muscle pain, cramping or sweating, that is an emergency room visit, not a wait and see.

Tell us when you call if you have found one. We treat those harborage areas specifically rather than just running a general perimeter.

Spider Control FAQ

Will one treatment get rid of them?

For an active problem in a defined area, often yes. For a house backed up to woods or a lot with heavy insect pressure, they will keep arriving from outside, which is what the quarterly perimeter service is for.

Are spiders a sign of another pest problem?

Frequently. A sudden increase in spiders usually means their food supply increased first. We look for that.

Is the treatment safe around pets and kids?

Products are low impact and go into cracks, voids and along the perimeter rather than across open living areas. We tell you what was applied and when it is dry.

Do you treat crawl spaces and garages?

Yes, and those are usually where the problem actually lives rather than where you are seeing it.

What about spiders in the yard?

Outdoor spiders around the structure are covered. Broad yard coverage is part of the Ultra Yard Plan.
