The Mosquito Biting You Is Probably Breeding in Your Yard
The species most Gaston County homeowners are fighting is the Asian tiger mosquito. Black and white striped, bites in broad daylight rather than at dusk, and stays low around ankles and legs. It does not come from the pond down the road. It breeds in your yard, in containers, and its flight range is short enough that the problem is usually within a hundred yards of where you are getting bitten.
It takes a surprisingly small amount of water. A bottle cap is enough. Common breeding sites on a normal property:
- Corrugated gutter extensions and clogged gutters
- Plant saucers, birdbaths, pet bowls and kids’ toys
- Tarps, boat and grill covers, wheelbarrows, buckets
- Tire swings and stored tires
- Tree holes and low spots that hold water for a week after rain
- Uncovered rain barrels and French drain outlets
- Clogged crawl space vents and downspout splash blocks
Why Fogging Alone Does Not Hold
A barrier spray kills adult mosquitoes resting on foliage right now. Eggs already laid in standing water are untouched, and they hatch on their own schedule. Egg to biting adult runs roughly one to two weeks in Carolina summer heat, so a yard treated without source reduction is repopulated before the month is out.
That is why our service does both: treat the resting sites where adults hide, and treat or remove the water where the next generation is developing.
How We Treat
Inspection for breeding sites. We walk the property and find the water, including the sites people never think of, like gutter extensions and tarps.
Barrier treatment. The undersides of leaves, dense shrubs, ivy, the shaded foundation line and under decks, which is where adult mosquitoes rest through the heat of the day.
Larvicide where water cannot be removed. Ornamental ponds, rain barrels, drainage structures and low spots get treated at the larval stage.
Source reduction. We tell you exactly what to dump, cover, drill a hole in, or re-grade. It is the cheapest and most effective part of the whole job.
Recurring visits through the season, because new water shows up with every rain.
What You Can Do Between Visits
Walk the property once a week after a rain and turn over anything holding water. Keep gutters clear. Refresh birdbaths and pet bowls every few days. Store buckets and toys upside down. Fix the hose bib that drips into a low spot. Homeowners who do this get noticeably better results from the treatment than those who do not, and we would rather tell you that than sell you an extra visit.
Mosquitoes and Disease in North Carolina
West Nile virus and La Crosse encephalitis are both present in North Carolina, and Eastern equine encephalitis shows up rarely. Mosquitoes here also carry heartworm, which is a genuine and common risk to dogs. Locally transmitted Zika has not been a factor in this state. The everyday reason to treat is that a yard full of tiger mosquitoes is a yard nobody uses, but the health side is real enough to take seriously, particularly for pets.
Mosquito Control FAQ
How long does a treatment last?
Typically around three to four weeks depending on rainfall and heat. Heavy rain shortens it.
When should I start for the season?
Early spring, before the population builds. Starting in July means chasing a population that is already established.
Is it safe for pets, kids and pollinators?
Products are applied to resting sites rather than blooming plants, and we avoid flowering vegetation where pollinators are active. Let the treated foliage dry before pets are back in the yard.
My neighbor’s yard is the problem. Does treating mine help?
Yes, because tiger mosquitoes do not travel far. Treating your resting sites and removing your water makes a real difference even when the property next door does nothing.
Do you cover the whole yard or just around the house?
Mosquito service covers the resting and breeding areas across the property. For full outdoor coverage including stinging insects, ticks and fire ants, see the Ultra Yard Plan.
